Dementia Care: Train the Trainer Course

5 day course:

This course is especially designed for healthcare workers working within dementia care services or acute settings.

It is anticipated that participants will have prior knowledge of dementia care before commencing the course. If not, they can attend AlberPhil LTD’s four day dementia care course.

Aim

To focus on the theoretical aspects of dementia care and enable participants to develop facilitative and training skills in relation to delivering person centred dementia training.

Course assessment criteria

Level 2: Diploma

Level 3: Degree

50 % practical assessment

50% written assignment

Level 2: required to submit a 2500 word assignment focusing on a particular aspect of implementing dementia care training within the care setting. The participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to link theory and practice.

Level 3: required to submit a 3500 word assignment focusing on a particular aspect of dementia care training. The participants will not only be able to demonstrate the ability to link theory and practice, but demonstrate the implications of this within care settings.

Practical: will be required to devise a two hour dementia training session of which 30 minutes will be delivered to others on the fifth day.

The course can be taken long distance. The participant will be required to meet with the tutor at agreed sessions for tutorials until they have met the learning outcomes.  They will be required to undertake the practical aspects and submit an assignment.

The course will utilise aspects of action learning as a way of supporting the implementation of training within the care setting. After the course the participants will form an action learning set which will enable them to meet over the next six months to support each other and focus on developing skills required to deliver dementia care training. A key component will be to motivate people in maintaining dementia training, as well as a chance to deal with some of the complex issues encountered in implementing and maintaining dementia care within care settings.

On going support will be available on request after the six months if required.

Dementia Awareness Course

Duration: 1 day:

Level 1

Target: Anyone working with people with dementia

This course is designed for anyone working with people with dementia and will focus on some of the following key aspects of dementia care:

• What is Dementia – will explore some the key concepts and attributes underpinning the person centred concept and the implications on the person with dementia and care workers.
• Managing Behaviours that Challenge: Will explore some of the key issues involved in behaviours that challenge and the evidence based strategies required to manage behaviour that challenge within care settings.
• Person centred communication skills- will focus on the need to develop person centred communication skills which enables participants to identify key individualised communication abilities of the individuals.

Dementia Care Course

Duration: 4 day course:

Level 2

Target: Healthcare Workers

This course offers in-depth knowledge in relation to caring for the person with dementia. The key concepts explored will enable the individuals to gain more knowledge underpinning:

• The concept of person centred care and the key attributes involved.
• Managing Behaviours that Challenge and the key research based evidence to meet the needs of the person with dementia.
• Developing person centred communication skills will focus on the need to promote the individual communication abilities.
• Physical care in dementia care will focus on some of the essential aspects of meeting the physical needs of the person with dementia. This will include aspects such as Personal Care, Skin Care, Nutritional Care and Palliative Care.
• Risk assessment in dementia care will focus on some of the key risk assessments required in meeting the needs of people with dementia. Examples of risk assessments and care plans will be explored which will equip the participants with key resources required to maintain the safety of the person with dementia in their care.
• Medication used in dementia care- will explore research based evidence in relation to medication used in dementia care. Some of the main groups of drugs will be outlined and their implications on the person with dementia. Key recommendations will be explored with the main research based evidence emphasising limiting the use of these drugs in dementia care.

Provide assistance in facilitating training to new trainers who may have attended a train the train course

Support in complex issues affecting people with dementia

Support for managers and staff in maintaining person centred dementia care within care homes.

Support in issues relating to meeting the physical needs of people with dementia
